How to take care of your hair styling tools

How to take care of your hair styling tools

Most maintenance is quick and straightforward. A little regular care can help your hair styling tools keep working as they should.

Always switch off and unplug the tool before cleaning it and let it cool completely first. Check the product manual for any model-specific instructions.

Clean the filter on your hair dryer

Dust, hair and product residue can collect around the filter and reduce the airflow over time. If your hair dryer has a removable filter cover, take it off and gently remove any build-up. A soft, dry brush or cloth is usually enough. Make sure the filter and cover are completely dry before putting them back in place.

How often you need to clean it depends on how frequently you use the dryer, but checking it regularly is a good habit.

Keep plates and styling surfaces clean

Hair products can gradually build up on straightener plates, curling barrels and heated brush surfaces. This may make the tool feel less smooth to use.

Once the tool is switched off, unplugged and fully cooled, wipe the surface gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or rough materials that could damage the coating. Dry the surface thoroughly before using the tool again.

Store your tools with a bit of care

Let the tool cool completely before putting it away. Avoid placing a hot tool directly on delicate surfaces, inside a drawer or in a travel bag. Try not to wrap the cord tightly around the tool. Loose loops help reduce strain on the cable and make it easier to store.

If the tool has a lockable handle, close it before storage to help save space and protect the plates.

Look after the attachments

Keep attachments clean and stored together so they are ready when you need them. Remove loose hair from brushes and comb attachments regularly. Wipe nozzles, barrels and other accessories with a soft cloth when needed and make sure everything is dry before attaching it again.

Check that the attachment is fitted properly before switching the tool on.

Empty the water tank on steam tools

If you use a steam straightener, empty the water tank after use unless the product instructions say otherwise. This helps keep the tool ready for your next styling routine.
Never refill the tank while the tool is switched on, plugged in or still hot.

Keep the air inlets clear

Hair dryers, air straighteners and multistylers need clear air inlets to work properly. Check that they are free from dust, loose hair and other build-up. Avoid using the tool on soft surfaces such as a bed or sofa, where the air inlet could become blocked.

Pack carefully when travelling

Use the travel bag, but only once the tool has cooled completely. Keep smaller attachments together, and avoid placing heavy objects on top of the tool in your luggage. For products with universal voltage, always check that it is suitable for the destination before plugging it in.

A little care goes a long way

Cleaning filters, wiping styling surfaces and storing cords loosely only takes a few minutes. These small habits help keep your hair styling tools clean, ready to use and performing the way they should.
